Bookstore Notes

The following publications have recently come to our attention, but ARE NOT AVAILABLE from the Fifth Estate:

The Luddites: Machine Breaking in Regency England, by Malcolm I. Thomis.

An interesting book, although Thomis seems to miss the whole point about the Luddite uprisings. Instead of realizing the role that British unions took in smashing the direct action of the machine breakers, Thomis tries to argue that things would have been better if the craftsmen had had stronger unions. Schocken Books.

The Guillotine at Work, Vol. I: The Leninist Counter-Revolution, by Gregory Petrovich Maximoff.

Perhaps one of the best books written about the early days of the Russian Revolution and the years of Bolshevik terror that followed.

Cienfuegos Press, 337 pp., $10.00. The high price of this book as well as others that are distributed through the FE Bookstore is due to high printing and mailing costs from England. Cienfuegos Press, Box A, Over The Water, Sanday, Orkney, United Kingdom KW17 2BL.

Northern Ireland: The Orange State, by Michael Farrel.

A good book covering the history of the British occupation of Northern Ireland.

Pluto Press, Unit 10 Spencer Court, 7 Chalcot Road, London NW1 8LH England.

The Essential Frankfurt School Reader, (Early writings of such luminaries as Adorno, Benjamin, Fromm, Horkheimer, Marcuse and more.) If you’re having a hard time getting to sleep at night, this is the book for you. Thick As A Brick Award for critical theory. Urizen Books.

Interrogations. This is an Italian anti-authoritarian journal that is published in Italian only. The latest issue is devoted to the autonomous movements in Europe.

Edizioni Interrogations, via G. Reni 96/6, 10136 Torino, Italy.

It seems that the Orkney Islands, just off the northern coast of Scotland, are becoming a “hotbed of anarchy.” We first heard of the place from Cienfuegos Press and the Black Flag newspaper which both come from there, but now there’s a brand new anarchist Orkney publication called THE FREE WINGED EAGLE: Orkney’s Alternative Press.

So far there has been two issues of the EAGLE and although many of the articles pertain to the islands, there is a definite international view that makes this magazine interesting and informative to people living outside the islands—a very good publication. If you’d like a copy, a buck or two should cover the cost, or subscribe—$5.00 should cover that.

Write: Free Winged Eagle, c/o Over The Water, Sanday, Orkney, United Kingdom.

Here’s a few more new publications that are not available from us at this time.

Cienfuegos Press, Over The Water, Sanday, Orkney, United Kingdom, $1.50 (a New Anarchist Library edition).

Ecology & Anarchism, no.3. A British magazine, via Box 1000, Rising Free, 182 Upper St., London N1, England; $1.00 should cover it.

Subversao Internacioal. A Portuguese magazine (in that language) that is very interesting. S.I., Apartado 2500, 1112 Lisboa Codex, Portugal, about $2.00

Red Army Fraction. A new pamphlet from the Patric Arguello Press, Consists of a chronology, photographs, communiques and articles. Patric Arguello Press, 55 Sutter St., no. 103, San Francisco, Ca. 94104, $2.00.
