Anti-War Groups Meet

A Conference in Chicago of Dec. 26-29, student and anti-war activists has called for National Student Actions April 8-15 against the war in Vietnam. This will culminate in the transportation of as many students as possible to New York and San Francisco as part of the general Spring Mobilization of the anti-war movement on April 15.

Members of the Detroit Committee to End the war in Vietnam, the Wayne CEWV and the Detroit Veterans Against the War participated in this conference, originally called a Conference for A National Student Action in the Spring (Student Strike Conference) which was hosted by the Chicago Peace Council. Over 250-300 student and anti-war activists from over 40 national organizations and a score of independent Committees to End the War reaffirmed the call for massive demonstrations on the east and west coasts April 15 by the Spring Mobilization Committee, an organization formed in Cleveland November 26-27.

According to the resolutions passed at the conference the focus of Vietnam Week will be on

(1) bringing the GIs home now;

(2) opposing the draft; and

(3) ending campus complicity with the draft.

Some of the many suggestions for the actions at the conference are as follows:

(1) WAR CRIMES TRIBUNALS ON CAMPUS (as a continuation of the spirit of the teach – ins);

(2) REFERENDUMS ON THE WAR AND THE DRAFT ON CAMPUS;

(3) STUDENT STRIKES (on campuses where the opposition to the war is very substantial);

(4) AID TO VICTIMS OF NAPALM;

(5) ABOLISHING THE 2S;

(6) FILM FESTIVALS ON THE WAR:

(7) NEWSPAPER ADS;

(8) RALLIES AND TEACH-INS; and

(9) MASSIVE DISTRIBUTION OF LEAFLETS.

A continuations committee was established to work closely with the Spring Mobilization Committee for the organization of the April 15 Action and student participation in it.
