The Artists’ Workshop was formed over two years ago by a group of WORKING artists—mainly poets & musicians—who found that by banding together they could accomplish a great deal in terms of getting themselves together and getting their work to their public. Many of the original members of the Workshop have left town, as is natural, but it seems that no younger people have come up to replace them. If there are people in this city who are interested in keeping the Artists’ Workshop a healthy and growing group—that is; people who are ready to WORK at what needs to be done—they need to step forward now and make themselves known.
There is a whole lot that can be done in Detroit, but we have to do it ourselves. The Artists’ Workshop has maintained a physical facility for these two years, but this facility is now sitting idle most of the time, and it’s getting harder and harder to pay the rent each month. The original idea of a COMMUNITY of artists seems to have failed in practice through a lack of acceptance of responsibility by many of its members, but even if we can’t all live together, we can still work together. And there is much WORK to be done.
THERE WILL BE A MEETING FOR ALL INTERESTED PEOPLE AT THE ARTISTS’ WORKSHOP, 4857 JOHN LODGE at Warren, ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 22, AT 8:00 P.M. EVERYONE IS INVITED. There is no hierarchy, no exclusiveness, no formal structure -the only qualification you need is your willingness to work. An artist is a human being who DOES what he does and doesn’t just talk about it. There is room for everyone who wants to DO SOMETHING. If you are interested, please come to the meeting.
